Fall is Here, Time to Stock Up on New Superfoods!
I love everything about the Fall, whether it’s the scents, the sights, or the foods! The weather also makes you want to get all nice and cozy, so comfort foods are top choice. Which is why I am excited to share with you my favorite Fall comfort foods that are also superfoods. On the list: chia seeds, cocoa, and Goji berries.
Chia seeds are tiny, but jam-packed with nutrients! Chia seeds are known for helping prevent constipation and boosting energy, which are really great benefits to have when on a high protein diet. They also expand 12 times their original size, making them a very filling food. I enjoy using chia seeds in my oat bran pancakes and muffins. When using chia seeds in baked goods they expand more and have a lot more moisture. On the Dukan Diet you can have 1 tablespoon a day as a tolerated item, but that 1 tablespoon can do so much!
Unsweetened cocoa powder not only boosts your serotonin levels, which means it naturally boosts your mood, it also physically feels great to eat. The caffeine in cocoa powder also gives you an energy boost so you will not only feel happier, you will have more energy too. I love making a hot cocoa in skim milk using just 1 teaspoon. I sometimes even add pumpkin spice to it for a more Fall feel. You can also use the cocoa powder in your baked goods for the physical and emotional comfort it provides. On the Dukan Diet you can have 1 teaspoon a day as a tolerated item, but that 1 teaspoon is very rich in flavor.
Goji berries have a very fall taste to them. Not too sweet, but not bitter or sour either. A lot like pumpkin and squash can be. Goji berries are allowed even though they are a fruit because they are low on the glycemic index. Because Goji berries are packaged as a dry fruit they also expand a lot when you bake with them, making your baked goods expand more and have more moisture. Because it is a dry fruit it is also quite sweet when you eat it raw. Sometimes I just mix a tablespoon into my yogurt. On the Dukan Diet you can have 1 tablespoon a day, or 2 tablespoons on a PV day, as a tolerated item, but that 1 tablespoon is packed with energy boosting power!
